Program description


The M.Sc. program in Molecular Biology, Systems Biology option, offers an intensive, one-year training program (with rotations) and a 2-year program (research and thesis based) in the field of cancer research. The dynamic, interactive, and multidisciplinary teaching approach is cancer-focused and integrates molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, chemistry, biophysics, as well as more clinical aspects of research. The principal objective of this program is to prepare the students for a Ph.D. program in biomedical research.

  • The 1-year program offers a unique opportunity for students to undertake two research projects in the form of laboratory rotations within 2 of our research teams. These rotations, of 4 months each, take place during the Fall and Winter terms.
  • The 2-year program offers the opportunity for students to undertake a research project in a single laboratory.

During the Summer term, students participate in IRIC’s Summer School in Systems Biology. The Summer School is comprised of theoretical courses that cover a range of topics related to cancer research (BIM6064A, B, C, and D), as well as practical courses (BIM6065A, B, C, D and E) that include access to the Institute’s various scientific core facilities, thus allowing students to apply what they learn in the classroom.

Upon completion of either M.Sc. programs in Systems Biology, students are awarded a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Molecular Biology, Systems Biology option, from the Université de Montréal. With this degree, students can be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in biomedical research or get a job in a private industry or in the public services.

Since its inception in 2006, our training in Systems Biology has been very successful. The M.Sc. program in Systems Biology received, in the summer of 2010, the Graduate Studies Teaching Excellence Award from Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine.
