Research topic and relevance

We now know that breast cancers are very heterogeneous and that they consist of several tumor subtypes. As each tumor is unique in terms of its clinical course and response to treatment, it should be possible to distinguish one from another and to treat them in a custom-designed manner. Therefore, we are firmly committed to the discovery of new tumor biomarkers in the context of a personalized medicine approach. From a large collection of breast tumors and normal tissues we want to compare the differential expression of specific markers for certain classes of tumors and elucidate the origin and mechanisms of occurrence of these tumors. To do this, my collaborators and I use the most sophisticated tools available to the histologist such as laser microdissection, automated immunohistochemistry, virtual microscopy, quantitative image analysis and new generation sequencing.
