Research topic and relevance

Etienne Gagnon and his team study the molecular mechanisms that attenuate the ability of our immune system to destroy tumor cells. They focus on two particular aspects of the microenvironment of tumors, the presence of specific cytokines and of reactive oxygen species. They use a combination of cutting edge microscopy assays as well as genetic manipulation approaches to determine what is being affected and how to modify the immune cells (T cells) to reverse these effects. The goal of this research is to develop therapeutic approaches to stimulate the immune system to destroy established tumors.
