Research topic and relevance
The survival and development of organisms like humans rely on multiple rounds of successful cell divisions; in fact hundreds of trillion rounds for humans. During cell division, a major goal is to partition our genetic material equally into two daughter cells. This task is carried by a complex, multi-component machine, called the mitotic spindle. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the assembly of the mitotic spindle is the basis of Benjamin Kwok’s research at IRIC. He hopes that this line of investigation will ultimately lead to the development of improved treatment strategies for cancer.
